Erica Gavel elected Chair of Canadian Paralympic Athletes’ Council

Former wheelchair basketball player and Prince Albert product Erica Gavel has been elected chair of the Canadian Paralympic Athletes’ Council.

After spending the last two years as vice-chair, the 2016 Paralympian succeeds former chair Tony Walby. As chair of the Athletes’ Council, Gavel will also sit on the CPC Board of Directors.

Clark helps Canada even Rivalry Series

Saskatoon’s Emily Clark picked up an assist in Canada’s 5-1 win over the United States on Monday in Trois-Rivieres, Que. to even the women’s hockey Rivalry Series at three games apiece.

After losing the first three games, Canada has now won three straight and can win the series in the seventh and deciding game on Wednesday at Place Bell in Laval, Que.

Newkirk, Ens swim at the Para swimming World Series

Saskatoon Para swimmers Shelby Newkirk and Nikita Ens were among a group of 18 Canadians swimming at the season opening World Series stop in Melbourne, Australia over the weekend.

217 Saskatchewan athletes in action at the Canada Winter Games

There are 217 Saskatchewan athletes in action at the Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island, as the event got underway on Feb. 18 and goes until Mar 5.

The 29th edition of the event features more than 150 events across different 20 sports. Team Sask picked up it’s first medal of the games with Rhiann Arnold of Prudhomme winning a bronze medal in the female biathlon 6km sprint on Monday. Team Sask then won two silver medals in male and female gymnastics with Halle Pipko and Jami Reschke of Regina winning in the female synchro trampoline event and the Saskatoon team of Wilson Reimche and Connor Wehage winning silver in the male synchro trampoline event.

The 15-day event will feature more than 1,200 hours of live event coverage and can be streamed for free on any device at CanadaGames.ca/watch.
