Varga and Canada take silver

Avenging a round robin loss, the United States defeated Canada 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-20 and 25-22) on August 25 to claim gold at the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) men’s volleyball Final Six tournament in Gatineau, Que.

The Canadian team, which featured Muenster’s Skyler Varga, went 4-1 in the round robin, defeating Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and the United States, but fell to Mexico.

That record earned the team a spot in the gold-medal game.

Saskatchewan teams at lawn bowling nationals

Saskatchewan teams competed in all eight events at the Canadian Lawn Bowling Championships August 17-24 in Milton and Kitchener, Ont., capturing four medals along the way.

The Saskatchewan men’s triples and women’s singles finished with silver, while men’s fours and women’s pairs teams claimed bronze.

Veith named to volleyball Excellence Program

Prince Albert outside hitter Reuben Veith has been announced as a member of Volleyball Canada’s National Excellence Program for 2024.

The program is designed to prepare athletes to perform at the highest level of volleyball and assist in their development toward the National Senior Team Program and/or playing volleyball professionally.

Regina Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024

Four athletes and two builders were announced as the Class of 2024 for the Regina Sports Hall of Fame on August 26.

On the athlete front, two-time Olympian in athletics Ladonna Watkins, Paralympic wheelchair racer Jessica Frotten, NHLer Dirk Graham and Special Olympics powerlifter Aaron Higgins are all to be inducted at the ceremony on October 10.

They’ll be joined by multi-sport builders Bernadette McIntyre and Darrell Davis.

Paralympics begin Wednesday

Ten athletes, four coaches and one mission staff member with ties to Saskatchewan are in Paris awaiting the start of the 2024 Paralympic Summer Games, which will begin on August 28 with the Opening Ceremonies.

Patrick Anderson, a six-time Paralympian in wheelchair basketball, and Katrina Roxon, a five-time Paralympian in swimming, will be Canada’s flag bearers.
