Saskatchewan secures silver in 2024 Brier

The 2024 Montana Brier ended with Saskatchewan placing second after advancing to the finals for the first time in 29 years.

Saskatchewan’s Team McEwen entered playoffs with a strong start, defeating Team Alberta Bottcher 9-7 before dominating the Northwest Territories 7-0 in the 3/4 qualifier. Saskatchewan clinched a 6-5 win against Manitoba’s Dunstone which secured their spot in semifinals.

Mike McEwen (skip), Daniel Marsh (lead), Kevin Marsh (second) and Colton Flasch (third), advanced to the finals after defeating Bottcher’s Team Alberta 7-3 in the semifinals.

Team Saskatchewan concluded their time at the Brier after taking on Team Canada in the final to earn silver after a 9-5 loss.

Dash and Team Canada silver medallists

For the second year in a row, Team Canada claimed silver at the 2024 World Wheelchair Curling Championship, held from March 2-9 in Gangneung, Korera.

Team Canada’s second, Gil Dash, originally from Kipling, was joined by skip Mark Ideson, fourth Jon Thurston, third Ina Forrest and alternate Chrissy Molnar.

Canada went 8-3 in the round robin and advanced through to the gold medal game to face Norway, before falling 6-2 to claim silver.

Hudak claims two bronze

Prince Albert’s Brittany Hudak claimed two bronze medals at the Para Biathlon World Championships in Prince George, British Columbia.

Partnered with Mark Arendz, Hudak placed third in team sprint with an overall 22:44.4 time and earned an individual bronze in the 7.5-kilmometre biathlon sprint with 24:51.7 time.

In addition, Hudak placed fourth in the 12.5-km individual event with a 41:08.1 time and fourth in the sprint pursuit final with a 11:44.7 time.

The championship will conclude on March 17, but current results can be found at 2024 Prince George

Saskatchewan athletes take on Junior West Wheelchair Basketball Championship

Numerous Saskatchewan athletes will join other talented under-24 competitors from Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba at the Junior West Wheelchair Basketball Championship from March 15-17 in Regina.

The three-on-three tournament marks the first step in the Canada Winter Games process and will help prepare athletes for the 2027 Games in Quebec City.

Wassermann joins Canada’s Paralympic Trials rowing team

The Paralympic Trials for Para rowing are set for March 15-22 in Rio, with Saskatoon’s Jacob Wassermann joining Canada’s team in the hopes of qualifying for the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
