Hudak wins silver at the Para Nordic World Cup

At the 2023 FIS Para Nordic World Cup, Prince Albert’s Brittany Hudak won a silver medal in the women’s sprint classic standing race, finishing in a time of 4:35.97 in the final.

Hudak also narrowly missed the podium in the women’s 5-kilometre free standing event, finishing in fourth place. She also finished in fifth in the women’s 7.5-km sprint standing race and fifth in the women’s 12.5km individual standing competition.

Schmitz and Taylor at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships

Regina figure skating duo Ashlyn Schmitz and Tristan Taylor placed 11th overall in the junior pairs event at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Calgary this past week.

Schmitz and Taylor put up a combined score of 118.92 in the short program and freestyle skate events.

Biathletes Grundahl and Pletz compete internationally

Regina products Janice Grundahl and Logan Pletz were both in action on the International Biathlon Union (IBU) circuit this past week.

At the IBU Cup in Canmore, Grundahl finished 37th in the women’s 7.5-kilometre sprint, to go along with an 11th place finish in the 4×6 mixed relay with Canadian teammates Lucas Smith, Reid Lovstrom and Zoe Pekos. Grundahl also competed in the women’s 10-km pursuit.

Meanwhile, Pletz was in Czech Republic for the BMW IBU World Cup, where he finished 87th in the men’s 10-km sprint with a time of 27:21.3.

Team Sask finishes with 20 medals at the Canada Winter Games

Team Sask added three medals in the second half of the Canada Winter to bring the overall total to 20 medals for the event.

Ashton Debruyne and Josiah Hallett collected bronze medals in Judo, while Krystle Shewchuk won bronze in the female Para Nordic sit-ski five-kilometre interval start. With the 20 combined medals, Team Sask finished sixth overall among the 13 provinces and territories.

Sask at the Brier

At the Tim Hortons Brier in London, Ont. Team Saskatchewan has a 2-2 record through four games in Pool A action.

The rink, featuring skip Kelly Knapp, third Brennen Jones, second Mike Armstrong and lead Trent Knapp, picked up wins over Newfoundland and Labrador and Nunavut. However, the rink lost to Manitoba and Alberta.

Meanwhile, Regina product Ben Hebert and Team Wildcard #1, skipped by Brenden Bottcher, are undefeated at 4-0.

Dash, Wright at the World Wheelchair Curling Championships

Kipling’s Gil Dash and Moose Jaw’s Marie Wright are representing Canada this week at the World Wheelchair Curling Championships in Richmond, B.C.

In the opening draw on Saturday, Canada fell to China but then rebounded with a win over Czech Republic. Then on Sunday, Canada beat the United States and Latvia to improve to 3-1. On Monday, Canada picked up two more wins over Japan and Norway and currently sit tied for first place with China and Korea at 5-1.

Dash is playing second in his first appearance with the national team, while Wright, a 2018 Paralympic bronze medalist, is serving as an alternate. The gold medal game is set for Mar. 12.
