2025 World Aquatics Championships concluded
Two Saskatchewan athletes wrapped their time at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships on Aug. 3 in Singapore.
Saskatoon-born Blake Tierney competed in multiple events and swam to fourth place in the 200-metre backstroke event, breaking the Canadian record twice, once in prelims and then setting the new record with a time of 1:55.03 seconds in the semis. He also set an individual Canadian record for 100-m backstroke as the lead-off swimmer in the men’s 4×100-m medley relay with a time of 52.95 seconds. As group, the relay team set a record twice, once in the preliminaries and once in the finals, with a time of 3:29.75, breaking a 16-year-old record.
Meanwhile, Margo Erlam, who trains out of Saskatoon finished 20th in the women’s 3-m preliminary event and did not advance.
Canada claims gold at IWBF 3×3 Open World Championships
Regina wheelchair basketball player Garrett Ostepchuk joined Team Canada from Aug. 1-3 at the inaugural 2025 IWBF 3×3 Open World Championships in Rustenburg, South Africa to bring home gold.
After going 5-1 in group play, Canada played Spain for gold, taking the 14-9 win.

Clark named to Team Canada
Saskatoon’s Emily Clark was named alongside 29 others to Canada’s National Women’s Team for the 2025-26 season.
In preparation for the upcoming season, Hockey Canada will host 92 players from its men’s, women’s and para hockey teams for a national teams orientation camp, set for Aug. 26-28 in Calgary.
The Canada Games are set to begin
The 2025 Canada Games are set to commence with Opening Ceremonies on Aug. 9, in St. John’s and will conclude Aug. 25.
Team Saskatchewan will represent 92 communities from across the province with 377 athletes set to compete in 19 different sports. In addition, 85 coaches will be in attendance, as well as 26 mission staff members.
Regina dual-sport athlete, Hayden Kot was named flag bearer for Opening Ceremonies.
Senft, Canada dominate United States
Regina’s Gabrielle Senft and Team Canada secured another win this season, hosting the United States in Ottawa.
Canada dominated the United States 42–10, in front of the largest crowd for a women’s rugby match in North America.
The red and white will look ahead to playing Ireland on Aug. 9 in their final match before the Rugby World Cup.
Saskatchewan is well represented in softball
Saskatchewan fastpitch teams were busy over the weekend, with multiple championships taking place in the province.
The Carnduff Southeast Steelers walked away from the Canadian Women’s Fastpitch Championship undefeated, wrapping the Saskatoon event with a 6-0 shutout win over Team Quebec in the final.
The tournament also featured the Saskatoon Tigers, Saskatoon Stealth and Saskatoon Prairie Pirates.
Numerous athletes received all-star awards for their efforts, including the Steelers’ Deanna Gerrard (catcher), Carmen Hughes (infield) and Jorde Chartrand (top pitcher), as well as the Stealth’s Megan Bierle (pitcher), Brielle Frohaug (infield) and Adrian Laskowski (top batter), the Tigers’ Erin Kirkland (infield) and Amanda Paquette (outfield) and the Pirates’ Tehya Armstrong (utility).
The U20 men’s championship also took place in Saskatoon, with the Saskatoon Selects going 2-4 in round robin play. Outfielder Sage Roberts was named an all-star.
Meanwhile, Warman played host to the U17 event, with the Twin City Angels finishing 4-1 overall. Pitcher Emma Frisky and catcher Ashlyn Chatfield were named all-stars.
Also taking part in the U17 championship were the Moose Jaw Ice, Battleford’s Bandits and White Butte Storm.
Saskatchewan athletes reach podium success at Canadian Track and Field Championships
Numerous Saskatchewan track and field teams attended the Canadian Track & Field Championships from July 30 – Aug. 3, in Ottawa.
