Oatway claims bronze at Para alpine skiing World Cup

Kurt Oatway, out of the Regina Alpine Race Team, won bronze in the men’s sitting super-G event at the Para alpine skiing World Cup in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria on the weekend.

Oatway put up a time of 1:16.34, which was good enough for third place in the event. He had previously finished in fourth place in the opening downhill race.

Schwinghammer to represent Canada at the Freestyle Ski World Championships

Saskatoon’s Maia Schwinghammer has been named one of 26 Canadian skiers that will compete in one of four disciplines at the 2023 Freestyle Ski World Championships from Feb. 19 to Mar. 5 in Bakuriani, Georgia.

The moguls skier is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Deer Valley World Cup in Park City, Utah. Schwinghammer was the top Canadian at the event but lost to eventual silver medalist Jaelin Kauf in the semi-final.

Albers to represent Canada at the World Baseball Classic

North Battleford’s Andrew Albers was among the 30 players named to Canada’s roster ahead of the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

This will be the third time playing at the event for Albers, who also represented Canada in 2013 and 2017. The pitcher has also represented Canada at the Pan Am Games, winning gold in 2011 and 2015. He was also on Canada’s 2020 Olympic roster, however the team did not qualify.

Canada will play exhibition games against the Chicago Cubs on March 8th in Mesa, before taking on the Seattle Mariners in Peoria on March 9th. The 2023 World Baseball Classic starts on Mar. 12th.

Ramsay finishes on podium at Racquetball Canada national event

Saskatoon’s Danielle Ramsay finished in second place at Racquetball Canada’s National Team Selection Event held in Grande Prairie.

In the women’s open singles final, Ramsay faced Quebec’s Michèle Morissette, however Ramsay fell just short, losing 11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7 in the best-of-five match.

Saskatoon/Macrorie product Cassie Prentice finished sixth place in the women’s open singles event, while former Regina product Christine Keay placed fourth. In the men’s open singles event, Saskatoon’s Lee Connell finished fourth while Macrorie’s Tanner Prentice was sixth.

Sask. products make Water Polo Canada Youth National Teams

Regina products Sydney Krushen and Makayla Ulmer-Lutudromu have made Water Polo Canada’s 2023 Women’s Youth National Team, while fellow Regina products Taya Bumpas and Anna Ulmer have been named alternates.

Meanwhile, Regina’s Reid Tatemichi has made the Men’s Youth National Team while Zander Velestuk, also of Regina, has been named an alternate.

The teams will represent Canada at the upcoming 2023 PanAm Aquatics Water Polo U17 Championships to be held in Bauru, Brazil. The event, which is held every two years, runs from Apr. 2-8.

Linklater named to North American Indigenous Athletics Hall of Fame

Former Canadian 3×3 basketball star Michael Linklater has been named one of the inductees into the North American Indigenous Athletics Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023.

Linklater, who won championships with the Saskatchewan Rattlers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, has continued to be an Indigenous advocate and keynote speaker in his post-playing career. He is the founder of the international campaign “Boys with Braids” and is from the Thunderchild First Nation, located in Treaty 6 Territory.
