Dornstauder and women’s basketball team advance to World Cup

Regina’s Quinn Dornstauder and the Canadian women’s basketball will be competing at the FIBA World Cup Sept. 22 to Oct. 1, 2022 after finishing No. 1 at the qualifying event held Feb. 10-13 in Osaka, Japan.

Canada opened the tournament with a 86-79 loss to Japan, but rebounded with a dominant 96-64 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the final game of the tournament, Japan fell 87-82 to Bosnia and Herzegovina leaving all three teams with a 1-1 record, however, Canada claimed top spot with the most points for —175.

Initially, four teams were set to compete at the tournament, but Belarus withdrew in early February, leaving only the three, who all qualified for the World Cup as a result of the withdrawal.

Drury claims bronze at racquetball selection event

Saskatoon’s Danielle Drury won bronze with a 3-2 victory over Quebec’s Juliette Parent at Racquetball Canada’s National Team Selection Event Feb. 25-26 in Calgary.

After losing the first set 11-15, Drury battled back to win the next two sets 15-9 and 15-11. Parent won the fourth set 15-13 to force the fifth and final set, which Drury won 11-6 to take the women’s bronze.

In other women’s results, Macrorie’s Cassie Prentice finished fifth and Prince Albert’s Terra Cowan finished 10th.

On the men’s side, Lee Connell of Saskatoon and Tanner Prentice of Macrorie finished fifth and ninth, respectively.

Racquetball Canada will use the results from the tournament to select the team that will compete at the Pan Am Championships in Bolivia from April 9 to 16.

Ostepchuk prepares for U23 Americas Championship

Regina’s Garrett Ostepchuk is among the 11 athletes in Edmonton as the U23 Canadian men’s wheelchair basketball team prepares for the IWBF Americas Championship.

The camp will run until March 4, then the team will travel to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico for the Championship March 8-12.

Canada will face the United States on opening day before taking on Brazil March 9 and Mexico March 10. Semifinals are scheduled for March 11 with the medal games slated for March 12.

The top two teams will advance to the IWBF Men’s U23 World Championship Sept. 8-16 in Phuket, Thailand.
