Local teams compete at 2025 Mixed Doubles Curling Trials

Three teams with ties to Saskatchewan concluded their time at the 2025 Mixed Doubles Curling Trials, which took place from Dec. 30 to Jan. 4. in Liverpool, Nova Scotia.

Nancy Martin and Steve Laycock, both of Saskatoon, went 2-5 in the round robin and did not advance, to finish seventh in Pool A.

Kirk Muyres, who hails from Regina, went 3-4 with partner Laura Walker of Edmonton in round robin play to finish fourth in Pool A and did not advance.

While Saskatoon’s Rylan Kleiter joined Calgary’s Brittany Tran in a 6-1 round robin performance and advanced to the championship pool, where they lost two of three games and were unable to qualify for semifinals.

Donsberger attends IBSF World Cup

Regina-born, Kyle Donsberger competed at the IBSF World Cup from Jan. 3-5, in Winterberg, Germany.

In the men’s skeleton race, he finished in 32nd place with a time of 59.52 seconds and a top speed of 125.08-kilometre per hour.

Sask. athletes bear maple leaf at the 2025 U18 Women’s World Championship

Three Saskatchewan athletes are on the roster for the Canadian team competing at the 2025 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship in Finland this week, including goaltender Ava Drabyk and forward Alida Korte, as well as Prince Albert forward Stryker Zablocki.

Starting strong, Canada defeated Slovakia 6-2, with Zablocki securing a goal in the third period. They followed that up with a 5-1 victory over Switzerland.

In the preliminary finale, Canada dominated Czech Republic 4-0 to secure their place in quarterfinals, with Zablocki scoring twice.

Canada will face off against blank on January 9.

Sask. players join Canada at World Junior Championships

Four Saskatchewan players joined Team Canada in their fifth-place finish at the World Junior Championships in Ottawa, which took place from Dec.26 – Jan. 5.

Saskatoon’s Brayden Yager, Caden Price and Berkly Catton joined Prince Albert’s Tanner Howe on the ice and helped Canada claim a 2-2 record in preliminary play.

Their results secured the Canadians a place in quarterfinal action against Czechia, which they narrowly lost 4-3. Howe made the first goal of the game with an assist from Yager.
