Santiago 2023 Team Canada Updates – November 20th

Canada has made its way to the top ten in medal standings, sitting in eighth with 11 medals, three of which are gold.  

Nik Goncin and Garrett Ostepchuk, Men’s Wheelchair Basketball   

Regina duo, Nik Goncin and Garrett Ostepchuk helped Team Canada to a strong start in Santiago, winning their Saturday and Sunday preliminary games. 

In their first match, Canada dominated Chile 80-17, with ten points scored by Goncin and Ostepchuk not far behind, contributing eight points. During their Sunday game, Goncin scored 17 points and Ostepchuk with seven, taking Canada to their 82-42 win over Venezuela. 

The team will compete in their final preliminary round tonight, against Argentina. 

Keely Shaw, Para Cycling   

Midale’s Shaw competed in her first race of the Games on Sunday. In the C1-C5 road individual time trial, Shaw was edged to a fourth-place finish with a time of 15:34.08. 

Myriam Soliman, Para Swimming 

Myriam Soliman, who trains with the Saskatoon Lasers, finished sixth in her first two races on Saturday and Monday. 

In the 200-metre individual medley final SM7, Soliman finished with a 3:50.47 time. Monday morning, she finished the women’s 100m breaststroke final, swimming a time of 2:20.05.  

Mitch McIntyre, Wheelchair Tennis – Quad Singles & Doubles 

Mitch McIntyre of Esterhazy competed in Monday’s quad singles round of 16 against Ecuador’s Edison Molina. 

Representing Canada, McIntyre came out on top with a 2-0 (6-2, 6-3) finish. He has qualified for Tuesday’s quarterfinals, with his opponent still to be announced.
