Saskatchewan Para swimmers bring home medals from Ken Demchuk International Invitational
Five Saskatchewan Para swimmers competed at the 2025 Ken Demchuk International Invitational from Nov. 28-30 in Markham, Ontario.
Shelby Newkirk, of Saskatoon, competed in three events, capturing gold medals in the S6 50-metre freestyle with a 36.36 second time, S6 100-m freestyle event with a time of 1:22.81 seconds and a time of 6:02.15 seconds in the S6 400-m freestyle event.
Prince Albert’s Ali Deihl finished first in the SB9 100-m breaststroke event with a 1:24.81 second time and finished second in the 100-m backstroke event in the S9 category with a time of 1:28.96 seconds.
Catherine McCurrach, who trains out of Saskatoon, finished fourth in the SB9 100-m breaststroke event with a 1:36.01 second time and eighth in the S10 50-m freestyle.
Brooklyn LaBrash, who hails from Saskatoon, competed in two events and finished eighth in both.
Meanwhile on the men’s side, Regina’s Leo Zheng finished first in the S6 100-m freestyle event with a time of 1:19.88 seconds and second in the S6-S11 100-m backstroke event with a 1:29-.24 second time. Zheng also compete in the S6 400-m freestyle event to finish fourth.

Herbert earns ticket to Olympic Games
After finishing first in the men’s standings, Team Jacobs went 3-0 through the 2025 Canadian Curling Trials to claim the right to represent Canada in Italy for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
Regina-born, Ben Hebert will be donning the maple leaf for his third Olympic Games as the team’s lead.
Meanwhile, Saskatoon’s Team McEwen, featuring skip Mike McEwen, lead Daniel Marsh, second Kevin Marsh, third Colton Flasch and alternate Brent Laing went 5-2 through round robin play before falling 9-5 against Team Dunstone in semi-final action.
Finishing seventh in the men’s standings was Saskatoon’s Team Kleiter, with skip Rylan Kleiter, third Matthew Hall, second Joshua Mattern, lead Trevor Johnson and alternate Alex Horvath going 2-5 overall.
Regina’s Shannon Birchard (second) finished fourth with Team Einarson after falling 6-3 in semi-finals against Team Black.
On the coaching side, Shannon Kleibrink, of Norquay, guided Team Skrlik to finish with a 2-5 record.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada Hall of Fame inductees
Wheelchair Basketball Canada announced the recent inductees to the Wheelchair Basketball Canada Hall of Fame, which includes the men’s 2025 3×3 World Championship team.
Regina’s Garrett Ostepchuk and his teammates, Vincent Dallaire, Colin Higgins and Lee Melymick helped the men’s 3×3 Team Canada claim gold at the Open World Championships, a historic first for the country.
The class will formally be inducted during the official ceremonies in spring of 2026.
First stop of the 2025-26 HSBC SVNS Rugby Series
The Canadian women’s sevens team wrapped their first tournament of the 2025-26 HSBC SVNS Series season.
Team captain, Waldheim’s Carissa Norstein and Canada dominated the opening match 41-5 over Britain before back-to-back losses 24-17 to Australia and 21-19 to Japan. They narrowly missed semi-finals and were pushed into the bottom bracket to compete for fifth place after defeating France 19-12.
Canada finished sixth in Dubai after a 19-14 loss to the United States.
Three Saskatoon athletes wrap time at Philippines Futsal Women’s World Cup
Team Canada finished their time at the Philippines Futsal Women’s World Cup after a 7-0 loss to Spain, wrapping group play.
Saskatoon’s Jaydn Steinhauer, Erica Hindmarsh and Jade Houmphanh finished fourth with Canada in Group B.
