Chartrand competing for Canada’s Women’s National Softball Team

Weyburn’s Jorde Chartrand and Canada’s Women’s National Softball Team are in Guatemala City, taking part in the 2022 World Baseball Softball Confederation Americas Women’s Pan American Championship.

The tournament, which is held Nov. 12-19, serves as the WBSC Americas Continental Qualifier for the new World Cup format. Canada is currently ranked No. 3 in the WBSC World Rankings. The top five teams will qualify for the 2023 World Cup Group Stage. Canada opened up the event with a 14-0 win over Peru. Chartrand pitched a scoreless fifth inning to secure the victory for Canada.

Chartrand was previously named the top U16 Canadian pitcher in 2019. She competed for Canada in the 2022 Celebration Tour as well as the Canada Cup International Softball Championship.

Kozun brings home silver from the WPV Sitting Volleyball Championships

Melfort’s Julie Kozun and Canada’s women’s national team have won a silver medal at the World Para Volley Sitting Volleyball Championships in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Canada, searching for their first-ever medal at the event, lost a back-and-forth match to Brazil in the gold medal game. Canada was up 2-1 but then Brazil put together a strong comeback in the fourth set, winning 25-17, before closing out the victory with a 15-6 win in the final set.

Senft, Canada at the Women’s Rugby World Cup

Regina’s Gabrielle Senft and Team Canada finished the Women’s Rugby World Cup in fourth place after taking on France in the third-place game in Auckland, New Zealand. France won 36-0 over the Canadians, who lost to eventual second-place finisher England the week prior in the semi-finals.

Canada’s best finish at the event was in 2014 when they brought home silver.

Guard named to Canada’s World Junior coaching staff

Prince Albert product Kelly Guard has been named Team Canada’s goaltending consultant for the upcoming IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Halifax and Moncton.

Guard, who is the current goaltending coach for the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League, previously worked for Team Canada at the 2022 U17 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, winning a gold medal.

The tournament begins Dec. 26.

Fish finishes 10th at at the ISU World Cup

At the ISU World Cup Speed Skating Saturday in Stavanger, Norway, Moose Jaw’s Graeme Fish was the lone Canadian to finish in the top 10 in the men’s 5000m.

Fish put up a time of 6:31.263 to take 10th place in the event, which was the first of six World Cup events scheduled for the season.
