Thibeault a World Champion

After getting her start in boxing in Regina, Tammara Thibeault is a world champion.

Thibeault defeated Atheyna Bylon of Panama to claim the title of world champion in the middleweight final at the 2022 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, winning the second world championship medal in her career as she improved on her bronze from 2019.

The gold medal won’t be all for Thibeault this summer, who will represent Canada once again after being named to Team Canada for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Trio of Saskatchewan divers back on national stage

Pike Lake’s Rylan Wiens, Regina’s Bjorn Markentin and Margo Erlam, who trains in Saskatoon, are all returning from Victoria with more national experience under their belts after competing at the 2022 Diving Canada Summer National Championships in Victoria, B.C.

Wiens, who competed for Canada at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, claimed gold in the men’s open 10m with a score of 511.10. Margo Erlam also finished on the podium with second-place finishes in both the women’s open 1m and 3m to bring home a pair of silver medals. Bjorn Markentin finished fifth and eighth in the men’s open 1m and 3m.

Sask. products star at racquetball nationals

Some of Saskatchewan’s best racquetball players competed amongst the nation’s best this past weekend at the 2022 Racquetball National Championships in Brossard, Que.

Saskatoon’s Danielle Drury came home with two medals — bronze in women’s open singles, as well as silver in women’s open doubles alongside partner Alexis Iwaasa.

Also finishing on the podium in women’s open doubles was Macrorie, Sask. product Cassie Prentice, who along with her teammate Disney Lineares, won bronze. Prentice also was named the girls 21-and-under national champion, with the Junior National Championships held in concurrent fashion.

Meanwhile, Saskatoon’s Lee Connell won bronze in men’s open singles, and came just short of a second medal in men’s open doubles after a fourth-place finish with partner Trevor Webb.

Weber is off to Wisconsin

Jason Weber will be once again representing Team Canada, as the Saskatoon product was named as the strength and conditioning coach for Team Canada at the 2022 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, which is scheduled for June 6-13 in Madison and Middleton, Wisc.
