Canada captures silver at World Para Ice Hockey Championship

The Canadian men’s Para ice hockey team finished with a silver medal at the 2021 World Championship, falling 5-1 to the United States in the final.

After the Americans got off to an early 2-0 lead, Canada cut the deficit in half with a powerplay goal late in the first period. Unfortunately, the Canadians, weren’t able to find the back of the net again, while the United States added another three goals in the final two periods.

Canada defeated the Russian Paralympic Committee 2-1 in the semifinals to earn a spot in the final. By securing a spot in the final, the team earned Canada a berth at the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing.

Saskatoon’s Ken Babey led the Canadian team as head coach.

Saskatchewan athletes finish in Top 8 at Olympic Track and Field Trials

A pair of podium finishes and multipleTop 8 finishes were results Saskatchewan athletes at the Olympic Track and Field Trials June 24 to 27 in Montreal.

Saskatoon’s Michelle Harrison finished first in the women’s 100-metre hurdles with a time of 12.98, while Regina’s Scott Joseph captured a silver in the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.48-m.

Julianne Labach (Saskatoon): 4th – Women’s 800-m, 2:01.32; 4th Women’s 1500-m, 4:19.18
Astrid Nyame (Saskatoon): 4th – Women’s 100-m Hurdles, 13.49
Adrea Propp (Regina): 8th – Women’s 800-m, 2:07.90
Payne Wylie (Elstow): 6th – Men’s 110-m Hurdles, 14.81

Wiens finishes first in Canadian Diving Trials preliminaries

Saskatoon’s Rylan Wiens got off to a strong start at the Canadian Diving Trials in Toronto as he competes to claim one of Canada’s two Olympic spots in the men’s 10-metre platform event.

Wiens was in first place with 489.15 points following Tuesday’s preliminary round. Semifinals are scheduled for Thursday at 10:30 a.m. (SK time) and will be followed that afternoon with the finals at 1:25 p.m. (SK time).

The Trials are being streamed live on CBC.ca.

Wiens secured one of the Olympic berths for Canada after capturing bronze at a FINA Diving World Cup event in May.

Canadian men’s basketball team begins Qualifying Tournament

Saskatoon-born Trey Lyles and the rest of the Canadian men’s basketball team are on the hunt for an Olympic berth as they take on five other countries at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Victoria from June 29-July 4.

Canada will open the Group Phase on June 29 against Greece before taking on China on June 30. The red and white will get a bye on July. The top two teams from either group will advance to the semifinals on July 3 with the  winners advancing to the final on July 4.

Canada, Greece and China make up Group A, while the Czech Republic, Uruguay and Turkey comprise Group B.
