Priddell named alternate

Regina’s Kenzie Priddell was named an alternate for the artistic swimming team nominated to represent Canada at the Tokyo Games.

The eight team members named to the team are experienced with seven returning from the 2019 Pan Am Games roster. Canada last competed at the Olympics in 2012, finishing fourth. Overall, Canada has won eight medals in artistic swimming including three golds, four silver and one bronze.

Artistic Swimming is scheduled for August 2-7 at the Games.

Canadian Olympic baseball hopes dashed

After a strong 2-0 start at the WBSC Americas Qualifier, the Canadian team lost their next three games to finish the competition in fourth. The finish eliminated any further chance for Canada, including pitchers Andrew Albers from North Battleford and Dustin Molleken from Saskatoon, to qualify for the Olympics.

Canada opened the qualifier with a no-hitter 7-0 victory against Colombia and followed that up with a 6-5 win over Cuba. Their first loss came in their final game of the Opening Round, getting shut out 5-0 against Venezuela.

The 2-1 record was enough to advance the red and white to the Super Round. Finishing first in the round meant an automatic qualification for the Olympics, while a second or third place finish meant the team would have one more chance to earn a ticket at the final qualifier in Mexico.

Unfortunately, Canada lost 10-1 to the United States —who went on to win the qualifying spot— and 6-5 to the Dominican Republic in their final game to finish fourth.

Diving Canada announces Olympic Trials format

Diving Canada has announced the details for the Canadian Olympic Trials from June 29 to July 1 in Toronto with events running from approximately 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. EST each day.

The competition will double as a national championship and entries will be by invitation only. The list of participating athletes will be announced the week of June 14.

The Trials will be the only chance for Saskatoon diving hopefuls Margo Erlam and Rylan Wiens —who captured an Olympic berth for Canada in the men’s 10-metre platform earlier this year — have to earn a spot on the Canadian team.
