Nikita Ens breaks records at Para swimming World Series event

Meadow Lake’s Nikita Ens set two new Canadian records and personal bests at the 2021 World Para Swimming World Series finale, held in Berlin June 17-20.

In the women’s S3 200-metre freestyle, Ens finished with a time of 5:00.58, lowering her personal best and lowering the previous Canadian record —set by her in 2019—by almost 45 seconds.

Ens also set a new record the women’s SB2 100m breaststroke. Her time of 3:39.85, bested her benchmark and the previous record of 3:41.11 that she set in early 2020. That time also established a new Americas record.

Ens was previously nominated to the Canadian Para swimming team that will compete in Tokyo this August.

With Saskatoon’s Ken Babey at the helm as head coach, the Canadian men’s Para hockey team earned a spot in the semifinals at the World Para Hockey Championship and a berth at the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing.

Canada went 3-0 in the preliminary round, defeating the USA 2-1 and shutting out South Korea 8-0 as well as the Czech Republic 10-0. That showing will advance them directly to the semifinals on June 25 with their opponent to be determined.
