Erlam, Wiens at the Pan American Qualifying Championships

Margo Erlam, of the Saskatoon Diving Club, finished in third place to win bronze in the women’s springboard 3-metre final at the Pan American Qualifying Championships in Leon, Mexico.

Erlam also just missed the podium in the women’s springboard 1m final, finishing fourth. Fellow Saskatoon Diving Club athlete Rylan Wiens also narrowly missed a medal, finishing fourth in the men’s platform 10m event.

Sweeting wins another national women’s curling championship

Maryfield product Val Sweeting has won a fourth straight Scotties Tournament of Hearts title, shooting third stones on the rink skipped by Kerri Einarson.

Curling out of Manitoba but representing Team Canada for a third straight year, Sweeting and her team defeated Jennifer Jones and Team Manitoba 10-4 in the final on Sunday. Sweeting was also named a first-team all star as a third.

Sweeting, Einarson and company will now represent Canada for a fourth straight time at the World Women’s Curling Championships in Sweden from Mar. 18-26.

Clark helps Canada win Rivalry Series

Saskatoon’s Emily Clark had two assists as Team Canada put up a 5-0 win over the United States on Feb. 22 to claim the women’s hockey seven-game Rivalry Series.

After losing the first three games of the series, Canada won four straight to take the series 4-3.

Schwinghammer at the Freestyle World Ski Championships

Saskatoon’s Maia Schwinghammer advanced to the super final for the first time, finishing fifth in her second world championship appearance, after placing 18th in the single moguls event three years ago.

In the dual moguls event, Schwinghammer defeated Austria’s Katharine Ramsauer and Japan’s Yuki Kajiwara to advance to the quarterfinals, but then lost to the USA’s Jaelin Kauf. Schwinghammer finished in eighth place.

Grundahl competes at the IBU Cup

At the International Biathlon Union Cup in Canmore, Alta., Regina’s Janice Grundahl finished 13th with a time of 23:58.3 in the women’s 7.5-kilometre sprint competition.

Grundahl competed in two other events, finishing 28th in the women’s 12-km mass start 60 and 34th in the women’s 4.5-km super sprint qualification.

Wasserman at the World Rowing Championships

Humboldt product Jacob Wasserman collected a gold medal in the men’s PR1 category completion at the 2023 World Rowing Championships.

Wasserman put up a time of 9:38.3 in the virtual event, beating Poland’s Jan Folga, who was the next closest competitor. This was Wasserman’s first gold medal in indoor rowing.

17 medals for Saskatchewan at midway point of Canada Winter Games

At the midway point of the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island, Team Sask has won a total of 17 medals, including three gold, seven silver and seven bronze.

All three of Saskatchewan’s gold medals came on Feb. 24. Saskatoon artistic gymnast Jordan Carroll started things off with a gold in the male pommel horse event, followed by fellow Saskatoon artistic gymnast Rylee Miller placing first in the female floor event. Team Sask flag bearer Luca Veeman, of Saskatoon, capped off the three golds in the day in the male mass start long track speed skating event.

On the same day, Miller added a silver medal in beam and bronze medal in uneven bars to her collection in the first half of the games, becoming Saskatchewan’s most-decorated female gymnast in Canada Games history.

After a day off on Sunday, the Games resumed on Monday as a new contingent of athletes and sports are set to get underway. The Games conclude on Sunday, with the closing ceremony.
