Sutherland wins Saskatchewan’s first gold at Games

It was Borden’s Savannah Sutherland who captured Team Saskatchewan’s first gold medal at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in the Niagara region of Ontario.

Sutherland, who was a Youth Female Athlete of the Year nominee for the 2020 Saskatchewan Sport Awards, finished first in the female 400-metre hurdles.

“I’m really proud to represent the province, we’re one of the smaller provinces and this just proves we can go out there and compete with all the bigger ones too. So, I’m really proud of that,” said Sutherland.

Sutherland, who recently competed for Canada at the 2022 World Athletics Championship, is a member of the University of Michigan track and field team.

Ostepchuk set to join Sopotyk in his first national team appearance

A pair of Saskatchewan products are set to suit up for Team Canada at the IBWF Men’s Under-23 World Championship in Phuket, Thailand. Garrett Ostepchuk, who represented Canada in 3×3 wheelchair basketball at the Canada Games, is set to make another appearance on the world stage.

Meanwhile Kyrell Sopotyk, who recently medalled in wheelchair racing at the Canada Games, will be making his national team appearance in wheelchair basketball. Sopotyk was a member of the 2022 Wheelchair Basketball Junior National All-Star Team.

Connell, Drury back on world stage

Saskatoon’s Danielle Drury and Lee Connell are each representing Canada at the IRF World Championships in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Connell is making his second world championship appearance after suiting up in 2021, while this will be Drury’s first.

Harrison, Labach

Michelle Harrison and Julianne Labach were each a part of Team Canada’s contingent at the 2022 NACAC Championships in the Bahamas. Harrison continued her eventful summer, as she raced to a fifth-place finish in the women’s 100-m hurdles, ripping off a time of 13.05 seconds. Labach finished eighth in the women’s 400-m with a time of 2:11.38 in what was the former Saskatchewan Huskies debut with Team Canada. Joining Harrison and Labach at the event was Saskatoon’s Jason Reindl.
