Santiago 2023 Team Canada Updates – October 23

Team Canada has started their time in Santiago off strong, claiming a total of 25 medals, nine of which are gold. Canada sits third overall in the medal standings.

Rylan Wiens, Diving

On Sunday, Rylan Wiens of Pike Lake and partner, Nathan Zsomber-Murrary, brought Canada a silver medal with 404.04 points in the men’s synchronized 10-metre platform diving event.

Blake Tierney, Swimming

On Saturday, Saskatoon’s Blake Tierney helped Canada to a bronze medal in the men’s 4×100-metre Freestyle Relay. Tierney did not compete in the final, although he swam in the qualifier, helping the team earn their place in the final with a time of 3:20.33. Team Canada later won bronze with a time of 3:15.83 without Tierney swimming.

Tierney qualified for two finals on Monday morning, winning his men’s 100-m backstroke heat, with a time of 54.68, as well as helping Canada’s Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay,  win their heat with a time of 3:53.39. Both finals will be held Monday afternoon.

Richard McBride, Skeet Shooting

Saskatoon’s Richard McBride was unable to make it out of the qualification round, placing 15th and 23rd over the weekend. On Saturday, McBride accumulated 68 points in the first men’s skeet qualifying round and 42 points in the second.

Ashley Leugner, Wakeboard

Ashley Leugner, a Fort Qu’Appelle local, earned a place in Monday’s Wakeboard final. She claimed her spot during Sunday’s last-chance qualifier with a total of 75.00 points.

Kelsey Wog, Swimming

Regina-born swimmer Kelsey Wog finished first in her heat for the women’s 200-metre breaststroke event Monday morning, earning a place in the afternoon final. Wog swam the Heat with a time of 2:25.96, ranking first overall.

Tammara Thibeault, Boxing, 75-kg

On Friday, Tammara Thibeault won her Round of 16 boxing bout against the Dominican Republic’s Milena Jimenez Castillo and will advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinals against Venezuela’s Maryelis Yriza Burguillos.
