Double silver for Wiens

Rylan Wiens won a pair of medals in Birmingham, claiming silver in both the men’s 10-metre platform and men’s 10-m synchro alongside teammate Nathan Zsombor-Murray. Wiens opened the Games with the medal in synchro, as he and Zsombor-Murray continued their immediate success together as teammates. Since uniting in June, the pair have won both a World Championship bronze and Commonwealth silver.

Wiens finished off his time in Birmingham in style with his silver medal in in the 10m platform. The Pike Lake product held a total score of 492.80, finishing second to Australia’s Cassiel Rousseau who had a total score of 501.30.

Erlam adds to Canada’s success in the pool

Wiens wasn’t the only Sask. diver to bring home some hardware. Margo Erlam, who trains in Saskatoon alongside Wiens with coach Mary Carroll, brought home a medal of her own, as she claimed bronze in the women’s 3-m springboard synchro alongside teammate Mia Vallee.

Erlam also left Birmingham with a solid individual showing, as she finished fifth in the women’s 3-m springboard.

Thibeault makes Commonwealth Games history

After winning a world championship earlier this summer, Tammara Thibeault continued to her success in the ring. Thibeault, who grew up in Regina, became the first-ever Canadian female to a win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in boxing. Thibeault won the 24th gold medal at the Games for Canada defeated Rady Gramane to win middleweight gold.

Harrison reaches final in Birmingham

Michelle Harrison continued her recent string of success by advancing to the women’s 100-m hurdles final at the Commonwealth Games with a time of 12.85 seconds. Harrison unfortunately had a fall on the last hurdle in the final, but leaves in fine form ahead of the North American Central American Caribbean Championships in Grand Bahama, Bahamas later this month.

Harrison was also named the Sask Sport July Athlete of the Month after a personal best time of 12.74 seconds earlier this year at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, which helped her finish 14th in the world at the event.

Rounding up Sask. results

Wheelchair racer Jessica Frotten, who resides in Regina, finished eighth in the women’s T53/54 1500m final… Anicka Newell, who has ties to Saskatoon, finished fifth in women’s pole vault… Regina’s Jordan Kos finished 17th in women’s lawn bowling singles and 15th in women’s lawn bowling pairs.
