Swift Current group at 2023 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships 

The 2023 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships commenced on Sunday, November 5th in Swift Current and features a local mixed curling team. 

Skip Shaun Meachem, vice-skip Kelly Schafer, second Chris Haichert and lead Teejay Haichert represent the Swift Current Curling club. The foursome is attending with 13 other teams, with their first game against Nova Scotia’s Team Flemming. 

Team Meachem was defeated by Team Flemming 8-6 but redeemed themselves against Prince Edward Island’s Team Smith 6-0. 

Saskatchewan will face Quebec’s Team Morissette next. 

Miller as Team Canada FIFA U-17 World Cup manager  

Soccer EXCEL Manager, Adam Miller was named as part of attending staff for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Indonesia 2023, from November 10-16. 

The Saskatoon manager will travel to Indonesia Friday, November 10 to support Team Canada as they go against Spain.   

Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards honoured four Saskatchewan coaches 

Four Saskatchewan based coaches were recognized at the 2023 Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards on November 3, in Calgary. The awards acknowledged various coaches who guided athletes towards a medal-winning performance at world championships, Olympics, Paralympic and Special Olympic Games.  

Listed are the Saskatchewan coaches who received awards at the gala: 

Ben Lozinsky was recognized for coaching the Canadian Women’s Basketball 5v5 at the Special Olympics.  

Jackie Powell was recognized for coaching Chelsey Makaro, Tyker Servant, Abby Wilson and Kelsey Wyse at the Special Olympics. 

Megan Penno was recognized for coaching the Canadian Women’s Basketball 5v5 at the Special Olympics. 

Ryan Jones was recognized for coaching Canadian Para swimmer, Shelby Newkirk 

Harrison to receive RBC Olympian funding 

Saskatoon’s Michelle Harrison was one of the 54 Canadian athletes announced to receive funding through the RBC Olympian program. 

Harrison is currently training in 100-metre hurdles and will act as an RBC Olympian ambassador during her pursuit of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The RBC funding will provide her with financial support, career experience and opportunities to develop her skills while looking ahead to the Games. 

Tierney to attend Doha 2024 World Aquatics Championships 

Saskatoon born, Blake Tierney was announced as one of the 26 Canadian swimmers set to attend the Doha 2024 World Aquatics Championships, from February 2 – 18.  

The event will allow Tierney to build his abilities as he looks ahead to Paris 2024.  

Pan American Games wrap up, Parapan American Games on deck 

Santiago 2023 Pan American Games concluded on November 5, with 14 medals earned by athletes with ties to Saskatchewan. Check out a full recap of the Games at cscs.ca.  

The action will return for the Parapan American Games, running Nov. 17-26 in Santiago.
