Baseball Canada announces roster for qualifier

Saskatchewan pitchers Andrew Albers and Dustin Molleken are among 25 athletes named to Baseball Canada’s roster for the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Baseball Americas Qualifier.

The qualifier is set for May 31 to June 5 in Palm Beach and St. Lucie, Florida.

Albers, from North Battleford, and Molleken, from Regina, are two of six former Major League Baseball players on the roster. Molleken is also one of 12 members of the roster who finished with a silver medal for Canada at the 2019 Pan Am Games.

Canada will compete in Group B and face Colombia on May 31 before meeting Cuba on June 1 and Venezuela on June 2.

Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials confirmed for June

Swimming Canada has announced the Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials for June 19-23 in Toronto.

The event was postponed in April due to COVID-19 concerns in Ontario, while the Paralympic Swimming Trials were cancelled.

Since then, Swimming Canada, in partnership with Swim Ontario, has prepared a 37-page Event Safety Plan.

“We have confirmation from Toronto Public Health that the event can proceed under the High Performance Exemption implemented by the Government of Ontario. We are working with our partners at the City of Toronto and Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre to ensure this will be a safe event that gives us the opportunity to select the best team to represent Canada,” Swimming Canada El-Awadi said in a news release.

Canada earns mixed doubles Olympic curling berth

With their fourth-place finish at the World Mixed Curling Championship, Canadian duo Brad Gushue and Kerri Einarson secured a berth for Canada in the discipline at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

This is the second berth for Canada that Einarson has helped secure as she skipped her women’s team to a Top 6 finish and a qualifying spot at the Women’s World Championship earlier in May.

With Brendan Bottcher’s rink securing a berth at the Men’s World Championship in April, Canada will have representation in all three Olympic disciplines.

Who will represent Canada in those spots will be decided at events later in the year.
