Canada claims gold at U18 Women’s Worlds 

With a 3-0 shutout victory over the United States in the final, Canada captured gold at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship on Sunday, with three Saskatchewan athletes contributing to the title.

Representing the red and white were Saskatoon forward Alida Korte and goaltender Ava Drabyk, as well as Prince Albert forward Stryker Zablocki who led Team Canada with eight goals and four assists at the tournament, including an empty netter in the final. 

For her efforts, Zablocki was recognized as one of the championship all-stars.

Oatway in action on World Cup stop 

Regina-born Para alpine skier Kurt Oatway won his third World Cup stop on January 8, this time competing in Santa Caterina, Italy.  

He also finished second, bringing his podium streak to seven to start the season. 

Norsten, Senft named to Canadian rugby squad 

Rugby Canada announced the 14-player roster that will represent the country at the third stop of the HSBC SVNS tour in Perth, Australia, and it includes two Saskatchewan athletes. 

Waldheim’s Carissa Norsten, who was recently announced as a finalist for the Saskatchewan Sport Awards Female Athlete of the Year, will join Regina’s Gabrielle Senft when the team competes January 23-24. 

CSCS athletes and high-performance coaches recognized with Saskatchewan Sport Awards 

Sask Sport announced the finalists for the 40th Annual Saskatchewan Sport Awards on January 9, with several CSCS athletes and high-performance coaches being recognized for their achievements in 2024.
