Musschoot, Opseth bring home bronze at U21 Pan American Cup

Grenfell’s Lucas Musschoot and Birch Hills’ Noah Opseth along with Canada’s U21 volleyball team finished in third place at the Men’s U21 Pan American Cup over the weekend in Havana, Cuba.

Canada went undefeated in pool play but then fell just short to Mexico in the semifinals, losing 3-2. However, a day later Canada bounced back in the bronze medal game with a 3-2 victory over host Cuba.

The United States won gold, while Mexico won silver.

Schmitz, Taylor finish sixth at ISU Junior Grand Prix

A month after winning bronze in their first Junior Grand Prix in Latvia, Shellbrook’s Ashlyn Schmitz and Wolseley’s Tristan Taylor finished sixth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix figure skating circuit in Poland on the weekend.

Schmitz and Taylor put up a score of 125.38 in pairs, which was shy of the third place score of 152.49.

Canada opens Rugby World Cup with a win over Japan

Regina’s Gabrielle Senft and Canada’s Women’s 15 Rugby Team kicked off the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, with a 41-5 win over Japan in their opening game.

Canada will now face Italy in their second game on Saturday, Oct. 15.

Moran named to Canadian team for Pan Am Championship

Prince Albert’s Tristan Moran will be part of Archery Canada’s team heading to the Pan Am Championship in Santiago, Chile to compete in compound target archery.

Moran, who is one of four Canadian athletes selected, is the highest qualifying archer out of the group and brings plenty of international experience with him, having won medals at previous world championships, including silver at the 2017 World Archery Youth Championship and bronze at the 2018 World Archery Indoor Championship.
