Goncin, Ostepchuk lead Canada to bronze

Regina products Nik Goncin and Garrett Ostepchuk were each a part of Canada’s bronze medal win at the 2022 Americas Cup in Sao Paulo, Brazil, after Canada defeated host Brazil 56-46 in the bronze medal game on Monday.

Goncin paced Canada in the win with a game-high 33 points to go along with 14 rebounds. He was named the top scorer of the tournament after averaging 22.4 points-per-game in Team Canada’s five games.

By finishing in the top four of the tournament, Canada qualified for November’s 2022 IWFB Wheelchair Basketball World Championships, which will take place in Dubai.

“It’s a long trip back home; this is way nicer than losing the last game of the tournament, for sure,” said Goncin, in an interview with Wheelchair Basketball Canada following the tournament. “We had a couple of tournaments leading up to this where most of the time we were down going into the fourth quarter, so it was just a matter of connecting the dots, making sure we believed.”

Madol, Canada finish fourth at FIBA U17 World Cup

Regina’s Ajok Madol and Team Canada wrapped up their time in Hungary with a fourth-place finish at the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022.

Canada fell 84-82 to France in the bronze medal game to close their tournament. Madol, an Archbishop M.C. O’Neill High School student in Regina, had a tournament high six points in Canada’s quarter-final win over Hungary.

Pierce, McCullough set to represent Canada at World Cup

Saskatoon’s Devon McCullough and Zach Pierce were each named to Team Canada for the upcoming 2022 WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup, which will be held Nov. 26 to Dec. 5 in Auckland, New Zealand.

McCullough and Pierce were two of ten core players named to the 16 player roster, which will be rounded out on Sept. 15.
