5 QUESTIONS WITH OLYMPIC HOPEFUL MICHELLE HARRISON

July 17, 2020

How have you adapted your training to account for the postponement of the Games and trial competitions, as well as the limited facilities?

My training is fairly relaxed right now. Since there are no longer any competitions on my schedule for this summer, I am using this time to recharge as well as work on some of my weaknesses. I am doing a lot of work in the gym to work on my strength. The main goal of my training at the moment is to maintain my fitness so I am able to get in a good block of training from November to April when we are hopefully able to get on a track again to prepare for the Trials in 2021.

You had an outstanding final year of competition with the University of Saskatchewan — finding yourself atop the podium, winning awards and breaking records at all levels. What was that experience like and how does it help you prepare for the future?

It felt really good being able to end my university career on such a positive note. I had a few tough years with injuries and it was rewarding to see my hard work pay off being able to make a comeback and run faster than I had previously. The records and awards were just an added bonus!

Among your accolades was being named a U Sports Academic All-Canadian. What were some of the key factors that helped you achieve that status while also excelling on the track and managing a business?

Time management is one of the key components that helped me keep my grades up. If I knew I was going to be away for a track meet or had several work orders, I would work ahead in school so I wouldn’t fall behind and minimize my stress levels.

Your business, Miche’s Niche, requires a lot of creativity to design custom cakes and cookies. What inspired you to create such a business?

I have always enjoyed both art and baking individually. After watching several cake decorating shows on the Food Network, I though I would try making a cake for a family member’s birthday and realized that it was something I really enjoyed doing. My uncle also inspired me as he would always make cool cakes for each birthday growing up.

What drew you to completing a degree in health studies?

I have always been drawn to a career in the health field and am very invested in leading a healthy lifestyle. However, I don’t know exactly what career choice I would like to pursue so I thought that a health studies degree would be a good general starting point.
